Knowing the parts and components of the fireplace and chimney will be beneficial to you. Burlington Fireplace is your one-stop shop for anything fireplace. We can answer all your questions.
Important Chimney Components
Flue Liner – An intricate part of the chimney function. The fireplace flue liner allows exhaust from the fireplace to the outdoors. The flue liner is a flexible tube that lines the inside of your chimney. A obstructed liner could cause problems like a smokey fireplace.
Firebox – The firebox is where you burn your wood. It is important to know that the type of wood can make or break your experience. Not only for a good burn but to also keep your fireplace and chimney clean. Burn hardwoods such as ash, birch, maple, or oak.
Mantel – The mantel is the decorative shelf that is above the firebox. A fireplace mantel comes in many different shapes and sizes. One thing to be careful of is that it be far enough away from the top of your fire, to avoid overheating.
Brick and Mortar – To create your chimney and fireplace, brick and mortar are used to construct it. Over time spalling may develop and a need to replace bricks and/or mortar may occur. Spalling occurs when the bricks have had damage to it, often from water. Spalling is the breakdown of bricks, such as cracking, peeling, or chipping.
Height – The height of your chimney is crucial. Sparks fly out of the chimney and can combust on your roof if there is not enough space to burn out. You will want your chimney at least 3 feet from where it hits the roof. An additional 2 feet higher than anything within 10 feet.
Chimney Crown and Cap – The chimney crown and chimney cap protects your chimney from water and debris. It also stops small animals from finding shelter in your chimney. It protects your home from allowing cold air in or warm air out in the winter. It protects your house in the summer when air conditioning is being used. Helping with energy costs. The crown and cap sit on the top of your chimney opening.
