Love Is in the Air, Not Fireplace Odors: Tackling Smelly Fireplaces This Valentine’s Day
The big day is here, you have been planning this evening for quite some time. Dinner is prepared and you have created the ambience of a lovely night. But there seems to be an unpleasant odor in the air. You realize that it is coming from the chimney and fireplace. You are embarrassed by the smell. You try to mask the smell with candles unsuccessfully.
That could be the scenario of the night you had planned. But instead, you noticed the smell last week. With some investigation, you realize it is the chimney and right away you call Burlington Fireplace for help. They come out. A chimney sweep is performed and your night is a success.
What To Do To Prevent Smells From Your Fireplace?
There are many reasons that your fireplace has an odor. Choosing to have an annual chimney sweep and inspection may eliminate that embarrassing situation and smell. Here are some of the reasons that there may be a smell from your fireplace.
- Creosote – The black tar-like substance that collects on the inside of your chimney. You may smell this more when it rains, or it is humid outside. Your annual chimney sweep will clean this unpleasant smell out of the chimney. Always burn hardwood that has been seasoned for at least 6 months. This may help with the prevention of creosote.
- Moisture – Once moisture gets into your chimney it won’t be long until mold and mildew start to grow. This will cause a musty smell that will come from your chimney. A chimney cap may be the issue. On inspection, we can determine if a repair is needed.
- Airflow – Poor chimney airflow will cause a downdraft carrying the smells from the chimney into your home. Your damper may need adjusting. At times the damper may not have an airtight seal. This will cause a draft and the smell. Talk to Burlington Fireplace for ideas on how to improve this.
- Animals in the chimney. Small animals look for shelter from the cold weather. What better spot than a warm chimney? Animals will bring in smells from food or droppings. At times animals will die and then there is the smell of decay.
You have avoided a disastrous night by being aware and acting on your suspicions. By calling Burlington Fireplace and confirming a chimney sweep visit, you got rid of the smell and your evening was a success.
