National Fire Prevention Week
Each year, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) celebrates National Fire Prevention Week. This year the event will be October 5 – 11. This years theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in your home.” This year they are focusing on the growing risks associated with Lithium-Ion Batteries. These are the very powerful cells found in technology such as smartphones and laptops. They are also used to power tools and e-bikes.

Lithium-ion batteries have become very important in our lives. Whether we’re at work, home, or playing technology follows us everywhere. We find it very convenient to have everything run on batteries. No need for wires and cords. However, with this convenience comes risks. Improper charging can cause overheating and even explosions. Due to the increased use of Lithium-Ion batteries in our homes, the NFPA feels the need to educate the public about their use and disposal.
What the NFPA wants you to know
- Purchase only batteries labeled with safety markings such as UL, ETL, or CSA. Check with the manufacturer as to what is the best type.
- When charging your device, use only manufacturer approved chargers and cords, and don’t overcharge the device. Avoid charging overnight or near flammable materials.
- Store Properly. Keep batteries in a cool, dry place away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Avoid storing in a metal container.
- Watch for warning signs. Disconnect and stop using if the battery is running hot, making noise, bulging, or emitting smoke.
- When disposing of spent batteries, do not throw them in the trash. Always research centers that are designed to dispose of lithium batteries.
Community Involvement
Nationwide, fire departments are getting involved in this year’s theme. They are offering school visits, open houses, and hands-on demonstrations. Fire departments are distributing activity books and coloring pages to kids. Tip sheets and safety flyers will be available to parents. You may also find social media campaigns and webinars that have additional information.
In our local schools, firefighters are teaching students how to identify fire hazards as well as what to do in case of a fire. The fire departments are making these lessons fun with fire truck tours, interactive games, and demonstrations as to how to use a fire extinguisher.
Adults will be given battery safety and fire escape planning ideas for the home, reinforcing family preparedness.
Where available, join in on this years events held by your local fire departments. National Fire Prevention Week has something for all and you will come out with a wealth of knowledge to help keep your family safe.
